South Nutfield v Claygate – 9 June 2012
On a cloudy afternoon and a damp wicket at Dalmore Avenue, Grosvenor Billinghurst sponsored Claygate Cricket Club were asked to bat first after losing the toss to South Nutfield. Hames (4-35 off 11 overs) and Allen (2-52 off 11 overs) exploited the helpful conditions to reduce Claygate to 42 for 4 after 12 overs. Nuwan Jayasena (34 with 7 fours), Sahan Wijesekera (42 with 7 fours and a six) then rescued the position, enabling top scorer Tom McKinley (45 with 4 fours and 3 sixes) to accelerate and help the innings close at 201 from 43 overs.
After tea, and on an easing pitch, the visitors raced to 96 for 2 after 19 overs. Fourth change bowler Luke Webb (4-20 off 6 overs) however had other ideas and put on the best display of seam bowling for Claygate this season. Nuwan Jayasena (3-21 off 5 overs) returned for a second spell to pick up two wickets in an over and Claygate dismissed South Nutfield for 118 to win by 83 runs, a result that seemed highly unlikely just half an hour before . Five batsmen fell without adding a single run to their account.
Claygate still lead the Surrey Downs First Division and play away over the next two weekends at Albury and North Holmwood.
