With both league teams winning on Saturday in the Fullers League and an excellent victory on Sunday against Midhurst, Claygate’s season has finally come alive!

The weather has already caused a number of difficulties already this season and with heavy thunderstorms on Friday night and Saturday morning it had the air of a familiar story!

However, a big thanks to Russ and Fergie who got the covers on the pitch on Friday evening which allowed the game to go ahead. Thanks too to Craig who turned up on Saturday morning to help dry the square!

When play got underway Claygate won the toss and elected to bowl first against Englefield Green. As with the previous week Rajindu Rodrigo and Luke Webb opened the bowling, both keeping it extremely tight and taking wickets with Rajindu eventually ending with figures 2 for 5 from 9 overs and Luke equally economical, ending with figures of 10 runs from 7.

Joel Watkins and Vikram Phrabhakar then ripped through the middle order taking 3-8 and 2-16 respectively, before Peter Knight mopped up the tail taking 3-3 as Englefield Green were skittled for 43 from just over 30 overs.

In reply, Claygate lost Sanjeewa to the second ball of the innings but Ashely Thorpe (19) and Alan Frewer (9) calmed any early nerves moving the score onto 31-1 before Thorpe was caught by an incredible caught and bowled, which left the bowler having to visit A&E for stitches!  Frewer went to a miss-timed shot, but Jamie Henderson and Chris Howe wrapped up the game in the 9th over- giving Claygate an early finish and a maximum 20 points to start climbing the table.

The 2nds also won the reverse fixture at Englefield Green.

On Sunday, the 1s also had an excellent victory  against visitors Midhurst CC in an exciting finish with Claygate notching the victory with just an over to spare. Batting honours went to Lance Mayer with a hard-hitting half century and Chris Louw took the bowling honours with a career best 6-26.
