5 Fabulous places in Surrey to visit this Christmas

If you’ve saved time doing all your Christmas shopping online this year, why not treat yourself to a day out in the countryside? Here are five places where you can enjoy a walk through spectacular scenery, followed by a hot chocolate and a mince pie bought from a welcoming, on site café.  So wrap up warm, put on your walking shoes and get ready to explore Surrey’s breathtaking heritage houses and landscaped gardens.

Polesden Lacey near Dorking is stunning at any time of the year, but on the run-up to Christmas the great house takes on an extra special glow, as greenery and decorations are brought inside.  Enjoy a bracing walk through the grounds followed by a festive afternoon tea in the café.

Claremont Landscape Garden in Esher boasts 300 years of history and can lay claim to some distinguished royal visitors. Kids can join the Peter Rabbit Winter Adventure Activity Trail, a fun activity designed to get them excited about the great outdoors.

Painshill near Cobham is a glorious landscaped garden created in the 18th century. This Christmas, visitors can enjoy a magnificent Snowfari, following a trail filled with glittering Christmas trees, amazing animals and giant gingerbread men.

RHS Wisley is hugely popular with garden lovers, and at Christmas, the grounds are lit up with eye-popping light installations.  Unfortunately, most of the Glow 2020 walks are now fully booked, but you can still check for cancellations online.

Box Hill is a beautiful place to walk and the view from the summit on a cold, clear winter’s day is breathtaking.  There’s a National Trust gift shop and café on site, where you can buy takeaway drinks and snacks.

As a result of Covid-19 restrictions, most attractions require visitors to book in advance.  Please refer to your chosen destination’s online booking information before planning your visit.
